Talking Points

Relax, I only have two. First off, you may remember from previous episodes that this Ethan. He is the son and heir of my oldest daughter. On Thursdays and Fridays his parent's work schedules require day care. It is my great joy to provide it. Last Friday Ethan went straight to the kitchen and in a very soft voice asked"cookie?" Now go back to the photo and I ask you, could you say no? His Mom was going out the door, so I handed him an Oreo. Now the little rat finds his volume and yells"COOKIE!" Back comes Mom and needless to say I'm busted. "Tell me you didn't give him a cookie at 8 am?!" Well I ignored the obvious retort and explained I brush his teeth at 9 every morning and his meals are healthy and well eaten. She sighs ( she's known me for 30 years after all) and tells me no more cookies in the morning. I reply then you'd better take some place else in the morning! Well I would have except for the fact I knew she needed to get to work and had no time for debate. Yeah that's it. Ethan and I had a long talk on loyalty and conspiracy. Then I gave him a double latte and a puppy before his Dad picked him up.
The second point is I wish to thank Beth at Social Climbers for posting an interview with me.
She has a very well done and popular blog, come to think of it she is very well done and popular as well. I just want to brag about the pretty blonde on my arm in the photo. She's my Baby Becca. Its her wedding day and one of the happiest of my life. Member of The National Honor Society and an All State catcher in fastpitch softball , she was our tomboy( is that PC anymore?Wait I don't care). The man she married took her to a city far away. She calls me almost everyday and that helps.

  2. I simply love this little story. As a new grandmother to a delightful 10 month old grandson, this is going to be me very shortly!

  3. James,
The rules clearly state that, as a Grandfather, you are at liberty to hand out cookies whenever the urge takes you.... and presents and love and sweets and anything that little Ethan's heart desires !!!! You keep handing out the cookies but don't tell your daughter that I said so !! XXXX

  4. My dear James,

I'm just catching up. Of course I'd give him a cookie. I'm easy that way.

Other subject: As I said I was catching up because I've been such a terrible correspondent of late -- you know, THE BIG PROJECT (cross your fingers) -- and I found that someone was rude to you.

I looked all over for the actual comment, but couldn't find it. Trust you took it down.

I cannot believe it. Who could possibly insult you? Are we not allowed to have different opinions? Isn't that what makes life interesting? Isn't this what we're all out here writing -- our opinions on whatever. Oh yes, then there is always that questions about good manners and correct behavior.

With the responses to the outrage you can see how many of us can't live without you.

  6. Cookies in the morning are very French. It's what they have for breakfast. Seriously! So why don't you tell his mum you only wanted to inject some cultural diversity and bring Europe a bit closer to home...

  7. MM-That might work, she spent two weeks in France when she graduated from college. Thanks!

  13. I do find it funny when grown ups get told off by their equally grown up children.
Tell your daughter she is lucky you waited till 8am. I once found my eldest son at 5am sat with my mum by the fire with two biscuits. When I asked her why my 10month old son had two biscuits at 5am in the morning, she look me straight in the face and with out missing a beat replied....
"Because he has TWO hands" I knew better than to say any thing and went back to bed.

Also I think it is in the Grand parent handbook that rule No1 states....
"You must spoil grandchild rotten and ignore all attempts by parents to stop this" either the hand book or in small print in the American Constitution.

    Much love
    Lia

  14. Two 'great' points I might add. Little Ethan is one lucky little guy to have a 'fun' grandfather. I'll be going to Social Climbers to check out your interview...and the picture.

  19. Catching up on you after a busy week - lots of illness, etc. Wishing my little ones had a grandpa like you to sneak them an Oreo!

  20. So, James, where can we see/read this interview? I'd be most interested. And, BTW, good for you. That's what grandfathers are for (cookies, puppies, and all other special sharing of secrets!)
