I had never in my "all together put together" seen this photo before last week. I have read about their feud over the blacklisted director, but other than that I didn't know about their relationship.Still don't come to that. They seemed to have had a lot more differences than common ground. They were legends and yet just men. I would have liked to have spent a little time with either man, but not a lot of time. What stands out to me from what I've read about them is they both tried to be a man of his word. If they promised you something you knew it was going to happen. I admire that more than anything else in a man. If you say you'll be here at eight and work hard until five, don't come late and leave early. If you promised your kid that you'll be there, be there. And when you took a vow to share one life until death do you part, live up to your end of the bargain (something these two had some trouble with). My mother used to say if you lead a good life and there turns out to be no heaven, at least they'll talk nice about you at the funeral. I think the greatest thing that anyone can say about you when you're gone is "he always keep his word". Or in my case "Like he knew anything".
Listen to your mother, she was wise beyond words.
ReplyDeleteYes to being a man of your word. That photo looks as if they were so comfortable with one another and it was an easy friendship. Those "Red Scare" times were difficult for everyone, not just Hollywood. xoxo
ReplyDeleteI think I would of admired your mom immensely. You said it true & that is what drew me to my husband. A man of his word through and through. I have a sweet neighbor who I try so hard to remain friends. Every time she makes plans or say's she is going to 'do' something I now have to plan on her never...ever..following through. Terribly sad trait, especially since she & her fiancee are our Realtor's. We entrusted them with selling our house. Should of done it myself, live & learn.
ReplyDeleteJames, you come from the best lineage, of morals and ethics!
ReplyDeleteThe two icons of music and the screen both did it their way.
Of your mothers words, agree, or as I say live your life as if this is heaven!
to brighten your day....

Where are those guys now?
ReplyDeleteWhad'ya mean 'no heaven,'? I only do housework because I thought I was earning extra credits!
ReplyDeleteJames, thank you for your kind words on my blog. They were very well appreciated. Sometimes I feel I am merely talking to an empty room, but then again though we may be our own worst critics, we are often are own best audience.
ReplyDeleteIt's bizarre how keeping one's word and really meaning what you say has become so exceptional these days. Where's the self respect?
ReplyDeleteI took it for granted as a kid that these legends would be around forever. When Hollywood stars were just a handful of people and known to all. Not so true anymore. Nice post.
ReplyDeleteYour mom must have been a very funny person. Intentionally, I hope. MMxx
ReplyDeleteI remember that fight. Someone with Frank was charged, I think. Vague memory. I'll Google it later.
ReplyDeleteAt any rate, it's an interesting photo of two of the stage biggies. (they must have made up)
I think Wayne probably kept his word, but wonder about Sinatra.
Your mom was right!
