Hello my name is James and I am a snob. Its been 2 days since my last snotty comment. But this shot of Jack Nicholson knocked me right off the wagon. I read a tale about a grumpy old man years ago. He was in church with his wife when a particularly homely young lady walked to her pew. " Good lord is she double-damn ugly", he commented a little loudly. " Hush, she can't help it,poor dear" his wife replied. "No, but she could stay home!" I know a terrible thing to say or even think. But in a lesser degree there is some wisdom in it. Jesus, Mary and Joesph, put a shirt on Jack. Despite what that XX beer says, old men are just that....old men. Act like a grown up.What makes me an authority ? Because I am becoming an old man. I stopped wearing tee sirts awhile back. I would never go shirt less anywere. It's like tatooed butts hanging out of cut off jeans, no one wants to see it.Common decency would dictate that some things, no make that many things, are not meant to be shared. As I've said before if NASCAR shirts and jeans are you then that's great. But wear them with style, or at least in your size. I guess maybe I'm the one who should stay home.
I hear what you are saying James....BUT he is Jack Nicholson!!! I don't know why that means he can get away with being topless or with any of his behaviour quite honestly - but he does seem to. There were photos all over the British press last summer when he "frolicked" in the Med with his children - the press made fun of him and his physique while, interestingly, the readers stood up and shouted "He's Jack Nicholson, leave him alone!" One rule for one, it would seem....
ReplyDeleteI will be interested to read the comments on this post :)
Hope you are well...thank you so much for your comment, as always you brought a smile to my face :)
He's not looking so great, for certain. But at least he's shirtless on the beach where it's appropriate and not on the red carpet! Love your blog, by the way!
ReplyDelete...You ain't just a kiddin'!! However, let me add this.....I am of that "certain age" when retirement is closer than I want to admit so that gives me some fashion history to look back on.
ReplyDeleteI was a child of the 60's...mod...flower power...beatles & all that rebellious stuff. But the kids now days.....I would rather see Jack Nicholson than some young man who's undies are on display & all the kids thinking he is so cool!! Gad-Zooks!!
Great Post!!
Marilyn
xxoo
Amen! I am grossed out every time I see some creepy guy mowing the lawn shirtless! No one wants to see that! Nacho Figueras, on the other hand, can mow the lawn shirtless - I will make cocktails and provide seating with a good view! Not that you would be interested...but many of your female readers might be :O)
ReplyDeleteWe could get stickers made! 'Put a Shirt On' or 'Cover That Puppy Up' stickers!
Oh and I am sure your readers (myself included) would appreciate you getting your snob on more than once every 25 days ;o)
ReplyDeleteSimone: I really like Jack, just not so much of him! As for my comment on your site, I only speak the truth.
ReplyDeleteMarilyn and across the pond: You both make good points. He is on what I'm sure is a private beach. I guess seeing this photo so early in the day set me off about so many things like undies showing, sorry.
SP: I would buy the stickers! If I keep my shirt on can I have a cocktail?
Like you, my poor eyes regularly take a beating. i've gotten to the point of not leaving home in shorts, and T shirts have never been my thing. I figure I owe that to an unsuspecting populace.
ReplyDeleteHilarious!
ReplyDeleteI agree however, not to be judgmental but come on, have a little decorum. If it is a private beach then well have at it, it's just such a shame that he doesn't have the privacy he deserves and we all would love to see him have while semi undressed. lol.
What great timing, today I was reading a forum discussion over at The Fedora Lounge about which decade in the last 100 years had the worst style, and many people said THIS one, because people nowdays have *no* style or sense of appropriateness when it comes to dressing. May I post a link to your bloggy here, over there? :)
ReplyDeleteHello James. I am a binge snob. And it's been about a half an hour. . . This photo is why clothes were invented. It's precisely BECAUSE he is Jack that he should never go out looking like this even on a private beach. But then I am also against wrinkled cleavage. I find modesty sexy at any age. But then I am almost as OLD as Jesus, Joseph, and Mary! JQ
ReplyDeleteOpening lines of this post are hilarious.
ReplyDeleteI was already pissed at Jack for the hideous shirt he wore when waving the starter flag at The INDY 500. He was up in the pulpit over the track wearing a Lakers cap and some khaftan-like tent of a shirt in horrible pattern. Given that he was officiating at a race of that stature...at least he could have worn an INDY hat and some rspectful form of shirt...jackass in my book...but a helluva an actor by any measure.
Toad: You and I share many ideals. I sometimes wonder if some people ever look in a mirror.
ReplyDeleteTarma: I suppose it is a evasion of his privacy, but still yuck!
MLS: I am in total agreement with you. but that's not a surprise.
ReplyDeleteC&C: You are so right about modesty!
Gingerella: Yes,I'm flattered.
Oh James, you are quite hilarious today! I concur completely-no sane female or male would want to see Jack's ample bosom and hefty stomach outside of a shirt, Jack Nicholson or no.
ReplyDeleteAs I have stated to you before, you are not a snob..you were just reared properly.
Cheers my good man. :-)
I have been lurking on your blog for a while, and thought I'd say hello.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree that he should have a shirt on, especially since he's got a bit of the man boob thing going on.
But I also believe that not every body should be as comfortable in a bikini as many are.
I think amongst the bikini-wearing populace only a tiny fraction actually look good in bikini. And yet they inflict the rest of us with their near nakedness.
I have similar opinions about men and women in spandex at the gym.
I am really enjoying reading these comments James, I had to pop back and see what your readers were saying :)
ReplyDeleteYour post has been on my mind this evening....I think I should tell you that the beaches of the south of France (where I will be this August) should be somewhere you should steer clear of perhaps....since they are full of people (male and female) who make Jack look overdressed! But that's Europe for you...just warning you ;)
Well said, James but then again you always do poetic justice to every topic you speak of, my friend!
ReplyDeleteNow on to dear ole' Jack! Well yes, I would agree that is a 'look' that should not be shared with the general public but when I look around at all the nip slips and butt baring that is commonplace these days, not only on the beach but the city streets and sidewalks, Mr. Nicholson looks very tame (am I making excuses because it's Jack Nicholson???).
Since I hold your opinion (fashion-related and otherwise) in the highest regard, I will ask you this, what do you think should be viewed as appropriate for a man of (dare I say it?!) that age to don out on the beach?
He's at the beach. He is dressed appropriately. Forgive my pointing out that if anyone is doing something inappropriate, the people doing something inappropriate are the photographer and the people propagating the photograph.
ReplyDeleteSince he is on the beach and has a very decent swimsuit, I beg to disagree with you. I believe he has the right to swim and go about the beach as he does on this shot. What else would he wear there and why should he not enjoy a swim when he wishes? I see that he is no Apollo but are only good looking, young, fit people allowed on beaches? even if they dress appropriately for the beach? I love your blog and I find you hilarious and sensible and sensitive. But this time I must say that I don't agree with you. But I'll keep on reading your wonderful words. Diverse views are what blogging is all about. A bientot.
ReplyDeleteHere's another one - Arnold Schwarzenegger before and after. He could at least put on shorts!! http://beforeafter.org/?id=93
ReplyDeleteI'm still laughing. The comments are hilarious as well.
ReplyDeleteAnd you are forgiven your sins....
May I say I've seen worse right around my condo swimming pool? And because people regularly let it all hang out here in Florida, this photo looks comparatively tame.
Jack is such an icon that I guess we expect him to remain trim and young as we remember him. Ah well. C'est la vie.
He needs to put on a shirt. If I was a celeb and looked like that, I would not be caught dead out there like that.

ReplyDeleteThat's MY plan.....
Please. He is absolutely appropriate. He is wearing proper swim attire - a pair of swimming trunks that grace his knees - not a speedo. And men aren't supposed to wear tops when they swim.
ReplyDeleteI haven't always looked the way I look. I one a state beauty title and represented my state at the Mrs. America pageant. I donned the typical pageant gown and the swim suit, too. This isn't bragging but I looked pretty good in that swimsuit. If I hadn't have, I wouldn't have won. Guess what? I don't look anything like that now. I'm older, getting wrinkles, and I'm fat. Does that mean I should stay home? Or wear a t-shirt and jeans to the pool or beach rather than a swim suit? I see obese women at the pool that are wearing proper swimsuits and they still don't look very good, but you know what? I applaud them for having the guts to do it, being comfortable enough to do it.
Life isn't just for the young and beautiful and I feel very sorry for anyone who happens to think that. But I feel more sorry for people who are so wrapped up in appearances and what they want others to see that they miss out on being themselves. Each person is an individual. Just because a person doesn't dress like me, drive what I drive, live in my zip code, etc doesn't mean I'm better.
Sorry. This is a major pet peeve with me and it seems the older I get the more adults I see trying so hard to be in the 'popular crowd.'
I'm with you, what ever happened to decorum? Here in Scotland, at the first sign of sunshine, a sub group of men whip off their shirts and walk along the street like that - horrendous!
ReplyDeleteHAHAHAHAHAHA! I love your way of thinking (probably because I think the same way). Your post was my laugh for the day! Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI love your first two lines and can't tell you how often I have quoted them!
