About mid morning yesterday I had a post all written in my head. Lord knows there is lots of free space in my cranium. It was to be a fiery rant about this woman I had observed in action. She was the perfect storm of bad manners colliding with a front of pure "lack of breeding", followed by a strong disturbance of mean and ugly. Then a few things were tossed my way by what ever fates have jurisdiction over the Great Rust Belt. While shopping I came across a young man, 20 something, helping his elderly mother. Tall, lean and handsome, he was wearing a brown herringbone jacket, tattersall shirt, jeans and deck shoes. He had it going on. A calm spot in a sea of tee shirted turmoil.
Then I went to my favorite thrift shop to find a replacement TV for Gabe's bedroom. What do I spy? New in the box still wrapped in tissue paper with a $175.00 price tag? Johnston and Murphy Cervino boots in oxblood. No way they would be... YES my size! For $6.99! As I headed for the check out what do I see on the $.99 rack? A genuine madras shirt, again in my size, staring seductively back at me. I scurried (OK, I'm too big and old to scurry but you know what I mean) home with my loot. I grabbed a cup of coffee and turned on the TV. Now comes the eureka bit. Regis and Kelly pop up and I prepare to change the channel. Then Regis says he feels the need to name the genre of style to which he belongs. He dubs it "geezer chic" I love it, its me.
PS
I remembered Gabe's TV.
Great example of synchronicity!
ReplyDeleteI love that there's a new appreciation dawning for vintage things, even though I know it's just the latest "fad" thanks to the TV show Mad Men, maybe some of the new converts will stick with it once the rest of the sheep have moved on to the next trend. Geezer chic....love it! I'll have to now say that I'm aspiring to Granny Chic when people at work look at me funny for listening to big band music on my computer. ;)
Perfect! Now somebody needs to come up with the female equivilent of geezer chic so I can describe my style!
ReplyDelete"A calm spot in a sea of t-shirted turmoil." (Tempest of applause) I may steal that for my blog.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your new acquisitions!
The title alone is priceless, the unique finds..brilliant!
ReplyDeleteWhatever you choose to call your lovely style, wear it well James, cheers!
Isn't it amazing how a day can turn around? Geezer chic - too funny!
ReplyDeleteLove your literary style in this post: the weather analogy, the contrasting characters and the story line of your marvelous thrifty finds. I hope you had half as much fun with the writing as I did in the reading! Well done.
ReplyDeleteI still want to hear the rant about the boorish wench....
ReplyDeleteDon't drag yourself down to the vermin. Your most positive outlook snared a a great find, proving that good things do happen to good people.
ReplyDeleteWhat great finds, you never know what is lurking around the corner! Geezer chic, I love it!!
ReplyDeleteA wonderful week to you and your boys!
You always make me laugh. And I'm quite sure you're no geezer! Chic, yes, geezer, no!!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend.

Good thingss do happen to good people, and I'm sure in a few years I will be using the term geezer chic when describing myself.
ReplyDeleteYou're making me chuckle James. Geezer Chic... love it!
ReplyDeleteHi 'Chic Geezer' James,
ReplyDeleteWhat a turn around of a day. I'm glad that you forgot the obnoxious woman and concentrated your cranium on the good people that you came across that day. I sometimes think that we all concentrate on the not so good people. There are probably more 'nice' people that 'not so nice' people in this world of ours but, the 'not so nice' take centre stage.
Can we have a photo of you in your 'geezer chic gear', James ?!!!!
Oh, and thank you so much for the very flattering comment over at mine. You made my day ! XXXX
Geezer Chic....either YOU do a post on it or I'm gonna steal it from you (with attribution back over your way)...that's brilliant!
ReplyDeleteAnd how does one know when one reaches Geezer Chic? I've always told my wife I can't wait to get older so I can wear what I want and everyone else won't care - they'll just think I'm eccentric.
ReplyDeletegreat finds BTW - you'll have to post pics of them in use.
Hello Geezer Chic!
ReplyDeleteI love your style! I'm definitely gonna use that 'Geezer Chic' title on someone else I know.
I am envious of your good fortune. Know just what you mean about the "not so nice among us.". I went on a little tear about thank you notes on my blog this very day. Geezer Chic.....LOVE it!!
ReplyDeleteJames,
ReplyDeleteHipHop, Punkrock, Grunge, Preppy - I think 'Geezer Chic' is perfect. My husband will appreciate this story.
Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving your kind notes. Rita
Hello. I hope this finds you doing well. I've been on a blogging hiatus since the beginning of the year, so it's been quite some time since I've been around to visit some blogs. I'm back from my break now. I wanted to make sure to visit your blog. I enjoyed checking out the latest posts on your blog. Great job. I'm back blogging now myself. I hope you'll take a look at what I'm doing. Thanks. Take care. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteFar from it I would say James!!

"Geezer Chic"....I have never heard of that before but what a great phrase/style it is!! That did make me smile!
ReplyDeleteOh James, I have to thank you....you have left me some wonderful comments recently - and I saw something very nice you said about me over at Rita's blog. That was very kind of you, praise indeed was the thought that ran through my head, I had a spring in my step for quite some time after that :)
Your ears may have been burning tonight....my husband (for the first time ever I might add) suggested something I might want to write about on my blog....I did point out that my blog is a rather "feminine" blog - apart from you, my lovely male follower, the only one who leaves me comments certainly - which I am thrilled about. I described your blog to him and told him about you....."a real gentleman" were my words. We all know how thin on the ground they are these days....we are all very proud of - and thankful for you James.
Finally, thank you very very much for your donation, that was absolutely lovely of you....I was thrilled to see your comment....and how wonderful to be the brother of a survivor, marvellous.
I do hope to hear more about Geezer Chic, am still chuckling over that.
Goodnight! :)
Why does it seem like when one finds something great, another find soon follows? Wonderful sounding shoes and shirt. 'Geezer-chic' - perhaps this needs its own handbook?
ReplyDeleteI just LOVE thrift-store finds like that, especially when you aren't searching for them! And, as to your previous post, I never get tired of looking at your little guys. As you know, I post plenty of my own. ;)
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend, James.
